A Day in the Life of a Graphic Designer at a Marketing Agency
Written by: Ella Threet
Ever wonder what a graphic designer actually does all day? Spoiler alert: It’s not just picking fonts and making things “look pretty.” It’s about solving problems, guiding decisions, and creating visuals that actually work.
8:15 AM – Coffee & Getting Our Bearings
The day usually starts with reviewing project timelines, checking emails, and prioritizing deadlines. Some days it’s a full campaign. Other days, it’s social media graphics, event branding, or a logo concept.
Before anything gets designed, we think through:
Who is the audience?
What action do we want them to take?
Where will this design live (print, digital, in-store, social)?
9:30 AM – Team Time
Marketing is never a one-person job.
We connect with our social media managers to talk through what’s coming up — new posts, upcoming promotions, and how things have been performing. What worked? What needs adjusting? What are we trying next?
Everyone brings something different to the table, and that’s what makes it work. The best ideas usually come from talking it through.
11:00 AM – Design Time
This is when I really get into it.
Building layouts that guide the eye. Testing color combinations that direct attention and reinforce brand recognition. Sometimes it’s a social graphic. Sometimes it’s signage. Sometimes it’s a quick update that still needs to look polished.
Every decision has a purpose:
Does this hierarchy make sense?
Is the message clear at first glance?
What action is this design encouraging?
1:00 PM – Revisions & Refinement
Feedback is part of the process.
Sometimes it’s a small tweak. Sometimes it’s a complete pivot. The goal isn’t just something that looks good. It’s something that works.
We take a step back and ask:
Does this better guide the audience?
Is it actually driving the action we want?
2:30 PM – Social Media & Digital Content
Short-form video. Social graphics. Campaign visuals.
A graphic might need to show up on:
Instagram
In-store signage
A website banner
A digital ad
An email
Consistency across platforms is what builds strong brands.
4:00 PM – Prep for Tomorrow
Before the day ends, I double-check deadlines, organize my files, and make notes for tomorrow. Some projects are finished. Some are still in progress. There’s usually something waiting for the morning.
Agency life is never the same day to day, and that’s the point. Every project brings a new problem to solve, and that’s what design is really about. It’s not decoration, it’s decision-making, connecting strategy to execution and working collaboratively to create something that actually performs.
