3 Design Trends for 2023 designers won’t tell you about.

Written By Blake Martin

Like any industry, there are things that the people on the inside keep on the inside. Sometimes it’s because of selfishness. Other times its because giving away secrets seems like you’re sabotaging yourself. There are definitely things I’m not going to tell you. But here are some design trends, or tools, that I will tell you about.

1. Artificial Intelligence

Believe it or not, AI is coming for you. And for me. It’s possible it will phase out your job and mine. I’m not worried, yet. Our job as designers is to help our clients find the best and most effective way to showcase who they are. AI is a tool to help us get to a final result quicker. As of now it looks like our jobs are safe but AI will certainly make for a smoother workflow. The reason I placed AI in the short list for design trends is because certain tools have an aesthetic of their own. Check out the example below. The prompt I told the AI generator was simply ‘A monkey playing baseball’ and ‘A steam punk impressionist painting of the last day on earth’.

2. Maximalism or Anti-Design

The aesthetic can be a little ugly. But it’s loud! It’s in your face and it gets the message across. I think it looks like an 80s or 90s throwback in some cases. Some of the stock assets in programs like Figma and Canva lead heavily towards anti-design. They’re not the best tools for all design, but in a lot of cases, they’re good enough. Jumping into a program like this without any skills will allow you to produce something. Anything! Sometimes that’s enough. The results are far better than anything created through Microsoft Office or MS Paint for my OG readers. I used an AI tool to produce the below images.

3. Motion

With the increased popularity of digitization of everything, motion is without a doubt growing along with it. It’s easier to accomplish and accessible to anyone with a phone. TikTok and Instagram make it really easy to add a little motion to your content.

Every year I read about the next popular style or trend. No one ever really knows of course. There are a handful of the same trends year after year. The things that change are the subject matter and the tech involved. It comes down to what looks good and what converts viewers into customers. We can help you look good, effectively. Start the conversation.
